Channel reminders
A channel reminder is a direct message (DM) from the bot saying you have not posted in a channel today. You choose which ones you get and, if you like, when. A reminder never repeats what anyone wrote.
Each channel reminder is a rule that an admin sets up: which channel to watch, when to check and what to say. For example, the stand-up rule watches the stand-up channel. If your day starts at 09:00 and the rule waits 120 minutes, the bot checks at 11:00 your time. If you have posted there since midnight, nothing happens. If not, you get a DM.
You need a timezone and working hours first. Set them with /hours set, see Timezone and working hours.
When a reminder fires
Section titled “When a reminder fires”A rule starts from the start or the end of your work day and adds its wait. That moment is when the bot checks whether you have posted (see what counts). If you set your own time, that time is the moment and the wait is not added.
- Checks run every 15 minutes by default, so the DM can arrive a little late.
- If the bot was down and the moment passed by more than 60 minutes (the default late limit), the reminder is skipped, not sent late.
- A work day that starts on a Saturday or Sunday in your timezone never produces a reminder, even with your own time. Overnight hours (an end time earlier than the start time) can still remind you on Saturday for Friday’s work day. There is no holiday support.
- You get at most one reminder per rule per work day.
Saving your hours with /hours set also checks your start-of-day reminders at once, without the rule’s wait. See Timezone and working hours.
What counts as having posted
Section titled “What counts as having posted”You have posted if you wrote a normal message or reply, not since deleted, in the watched channel or one of its threads, since the counting period began. System messages, such as a thread starting, do not count. If the rule requires an attachment, the post must include one.
The counting period is the stretch of time the bot looks at for your post. It normally starts at midnight (your time) on the day your work day began. If the reminder is due on the following day, such as an end-of-day reminder for overnight hours, it starts 3 hours before your work day began instead. If you have less than 6 hours off between work days, it starts half of your time off before your work day.
For example, with hours 16:00 to 00:00 and an end-of-day reminder, the period starts at 13:00, so a post made at 12:00 does not count.
The rules that ship with the bot
Section titled “The rules that ship with the bot”| Rule | Starts from | Wait | Attachment | On by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
standup | Start of your work day | 120 minutes | Not needed | Yes |
art-eod | End of your work day | 0 minutes | Required | No |
follow-up | Not a channel reminder. See Follow-ups | Yes |
Both shipped rules start with no channel, and a rule with no channel does nothing.
standupfinds its own channel: a text or announcement channel namedstand-up(capitals do not matter). It never replaces a channel that is already set. A channel namedstandup, without the hyphen, is not found, so an admin has to set it.art-eodstays off until an admin turns it on and sets a channel.
Admins add and change rules in Reminder rules.
See your reminders
Section titled “See your reminders”/reminders list shows every reminder the server has enabled, with your own on/off state and custom time. It takes no options. The follow-up line is the wording behind follow-ups, which you cannot turn off here.
You type
/reminders list
Doge Bot replies
follow-up: on request with /follow
standup (on): #stand-up, at the start of your work day, 120 min after
Only you can see this
Each line gives the name, on or off for you (with your custom time, for example (off, 09:30)), the channel or not set, when it checks (at the start of your work day, at the end of your work day or on request), then N min after if the rule waits and needs an attachment if it requires one.
Disabled rules are hidden. With none, you see There are no reminders set up. A very long list is cut at 2000 characters.
Turn one off or on
Section titled “Turn one off or on”/reminders toggle changes the setting for you only. Every reminder is on for you by default.
You type
/reminders toggle rule: standup state: off
Doge Bot replies
Reminder standup is now off for you.
Only you can see this
Set your own time
Section titled “Set your own time”/reminders time sets the exact time one reminder fires for you, instead of the start or end of your work day plus the rule’s wait.
You type
/reminders time rule: standup time: 9am
Doge Bot replies
Reminder standup will now fire at 09:00 (your timezone).
Only you can see this
You type
/reminders time rule: standup time: clear
Doge Bot replies
Custom time for standup cleared. It follows your work hours again.
Only you can see this
An unreadable time gets "noon" is not a time I understand. Try 9am, 9:30 or 17:00. with your own text in the quotes. A name that does not exist, is disabled by an admin, or is follow-up gets There is no reminder called "name". Pick one from the suggestions. from both commands.
What the reminder looks like
Section titled “What the reminder looks like”Each rule has its own wording, which an admin can change. This is the shipped stand-up message for a member called Sam. Discord shows the channel as a clickable link.
Doge Bot sends you a DM
Good morning Sam, looks like you haven’t posted in #stand-up yet. This is a friendly reminder to do so whenever you get the chance. Your previous post: https://discord.com/channels/123456789012345678/200000000000000001/300000000000000002
The last part links to your most recent post from before the counting period (normally, before today) in that channel or one of its threads. With no earlier post, it is left out and the message ends after chance. Only the link appears, never the text of your post.
The greeting follows the time of day in your timezone: Good morning from 05:00 to 11:59, Good afternoon from 12:00 to 16:59, and Good evening from 17:00 to 04:59. The name is the first word of your name in the server.
If you did not get one
Section titled “If you did not get one”| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| No timezone or working hours | Set both with Timezone and working hours. |
| Your work day started on a Saturday or Sunday in your timezone | Nothing. Weekend work days never fire. |
| You already posted in the counting period | Nothing. That is the point. |
| You saved your hours before your day started, or after it ended | Saving hours sends a reminder at once only while your work day is under way, and only for start-of-day reminders. Otherwise the bot’s regular check decides, and skips it if the time passed more than the late limit ago. |
| You already got one for that work day | At most one per rule per work day, even if you change your hours or an admin changes the rule’s channel or wait. |
| The bot could not check the channel on Discord | Before sending, the bot also asks Discord. If that fails, nothing is sent and it tries again at its next check, until the late limit passes. |
| The reminder is off for you | Check /reminders list and turn it on. |
| The rule is disabled or has no channel | Ask an admin. If your channel is called standup, it needs setting by hand. |
| Reminders are switched off for the whole bot | Tell whoever runs the bot. |
| You have direct messages closed, or you blocked the bot | Open them or unblock the bot. The failed message is not retried. |
| The bot was down past the 60 minute limit | The missed reminder is skipped. |
| You left the server | Members who left get none. |
- Follow-ups are reminders you set yourself on a single message.
- What the bot stores explains what it keeps about your posts.
