Timezone and working hours

One command tells the bot your timezone and when your day starts and ends. Channel reminders, the time options on follow-ups and scheduled summaries depend on it. Every reply on this page is private: only you can see it.

Type /hours set in any channel of the server and fill in your start time, end time and timezone. For zone, type a few letters of a city or region and Discord shows a list to pick from.

start text required

Start of your work day, for example 9am or 09:00.

end text required

End of your work day, for example 5pm or 17:00.

zone text required

Your timezone. Type a few letters, for example nairobi or New York, and pick the match from the list (up to 25 at a time). Required every time you run the command.

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: 9am end: 5pm zone: America/New_York

Doge Bot replies

Working hours saved: 09:00 to 17:00 (America/New_York)

Only you can see this

Always pick a suggestion from the list instead of typing the whole name. Saved zones look like America/New_York or Africa/Nairobi, and the name must match one exactly, including capital letters. UTC is also accepted. If it does not match, nothing is saved and you see:

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: 9am end: 5pm zone: Mars/Olympus

Doge Bot replies

“Mars/Olympus” is not a valid timezone. Pick one from the suggestions.

Only you can see this

Discord does not let you send the command without zone. If it is sent blank anyway, the bot replies as below and saves nothing:

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: 9am end: 5pm

Doge Bot replies

I also need your timezone. Run /hours set again and fill in zone. Nothing was saved.

Only you can see this

To change only your timezone or only your hours, run /hours set again with all three values (repeat the part you are not changing). There is no separate timezone command.

You typeResult
9am, 9 am, 9AM09:00
5:30 pm17:30
12am00:00
12pm12:00
09:00, 9:00, 17:0009:00, 09:00, 17:00
0900, 900, 173009:00, 09:00, 17:30

These are not understood: an empty value, noon, abc, 25:00, 24:00, 9:75, 13pm, 0am, 9:5, 9:00:00 and a bare 9. Seconds are never accepted.

A bare four-digit number is read as a clock time, so 2026 means 20:26.

For start and end, Discord suggests half-hour slots such as 09:00 and 09:30. You can type your own, such as 5pm, even when it is not in the list.

An unreadable time gets this reply, naming the first bad value:

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: noon end: 5pm zone: America/New_York

Doge Bot replies

“noon” is not a time I understand. Try 9am, 9:30 or 17:00.

Only you can see this

Start and end must be different. 9am and 09:00 count as the same time.

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: 9am end: 09:00 zone: America/New_York

Doge Bot replies

Start and end must be different times.

Only you can see this

If your end time is earlier than your start time, the bot treats your day as running overnight and ends it the next morning. The reply says so.

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: 22:00 end: 06:00 zone: UTC

Doge Bot replies

Working hours saved: 22:00 to 06:00 (ends the next day) (UTC)

/hours clear removes both times and keeps your timezone. It takes no options and works whether or not hours were set.

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours clear

Doge Bot replies

Working hours cleared.

Saving your hours also checks your start-of-day channel reminders, such as stand-up, straight away instead of waiting for the bot’s next regular check. If your work day is under way on a weekday and you have not posted in that channel, you get the usual reminder by direct message (DM) at once, and the reply gets a second line naming the channel.

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: 9am end: 5pm zone: America/New_York

Doge Bot replies

Working hours saved: 09:00 to 17:00 (America/New_York)
You have not posted in #stand-up yet today, so I sent you a reminder.

Only you can see this

Several channels are listed in one line: You have not posted in #stand-up, #art-updates yet today, so I sent you a reminder. Discord shows each as a link.

Nothing is added to the reply, and no message is sent, when:

  • your work day has not started or has ended, or it is a Saturday or Sunday in your timezone
  • you have already posted in the channel
  • the reminder is off for you, an admin disabled it, or the bot has reminders off or limited to a list of people that leaves you out
  • you set your own time for that reminder and it is later than now. It arrives at that time as usual.

This check skips the extra wait a reminder normally adds after your day starts, and it never covers end-of-day reminders. It counts as that work day’s reminder, so running /hours set again the same day sends nothing more, and neither does the bot’s own later check. /hours clear does not check.

/whoami shows your profile. Anything you have not set reads not set. Run it after /hours set to confirm the values.

You type

/whoami

Without a timezone and both times, you get no channel reminders. Without a timezone, you also get no scheduled summaries, though /summary now still works.

If your timezone, start time or end time is missing, the bot sends you one direct message asking you to set them. It is sent once only, even if you ignore it or it could not be delivered, and clearing your hours later does not send it again. You get it only if the bot has reminders on and you are not left out of a limited list of people.

Doge Bot sends you a DM

Hi Sam, set your timezone and working hours so reminders reach you at the right time. Open the server and run /hours set in any channel with your start time, end time and timezone.
