What the bot is

The bot reminds you to post, reminds you about messages you want to come back to, and answers questions from what has been said in the server.

Three words come up often. An admin is a member with the Manage Server permission. Linear is the ticket tracker the team plans work in. Whoever runs the bot is the person who hosts it and switches features on.

Artists, developers, leads and producers on the Doge Labs VR server. It works in that one server only.

Rows marked “off unless switched on” are off until whoever runs the bot turns them on.

FeatureWhat you get
Profile/whoami shows what the bot knows about you. /hours set saves your working hours and timezone, and sends your stand-up reminder at once if your day is under way and you have not posted.
Channel remindersA direct message when you have not posted in a watched channel by a set point in your work day, for example two hours after you start.
Follow-upsA direct message at a time you choose, linking to a message you want to revisit.
SummariesA short write-up of recent channel activity and Linear tickets, built only from channels you can see. Once an admin adds you, /summary now shows it in a reply only you can see, and a daily or weekly one arrives by direct message once your timezone is set. Off unless switched on. See Summaries.
InterestsFollow people, topics and channels with /interests and get a personal summary by direct message, every weekday or weekly, from channels you can see. Nothing is sent on a day when nothing matched. Off unless summaries are switched on. See Interests.
Ask/ask or a tag of the bot (a message that mentions it with @) with a question gets an answer from the messages and meetings you can see, with a link to every source. /ask answers in a message only you can see unless you choose to post it. A tag always answers in the channel. Off unless switched on. See Asking the bot questions.
Ticket promptsWhen you post a feature idea and Linear has no matching ticket, a direct message offers a prefilled form that creates the ticket once you submit it. If the bot knows your Linear user, the ticket goes to your Linear team, is assigned to you and gets up to three existing labels. When you can pick between teams, the form starts on the best fit, and a team that uses cycles (Linear’s name for a sprint) lets you choose one. Nothing is filed without you. Off unless switched on. See Ticket prompts.
Meeting transcriptsUpload a transcript to the meetings channel and the bot posts a summary there, visible to everyone in the server. With Linear connected, each person named as an owner gets a direct message with their action items already selected, and files them in Linear with one click. Off unless switched on. See Meeting transcripts.
Voice notesRun /notes start in a voice channel, or use Discord’s Invite to voice on the bot while you are in it. The bot joins muted and says in the channel’s chat that it is transcribing everyone who speaks. When you run /notes stop, it posts a summary and sends action items like a meeting transcript. It never joins by itself. The summary goes to the shared channel for an open voice channel and to the voice channel’s own chat for a private one. Off unless switched on. See Voice notes.
Reminder rulesAdmins decide which channels are watched and when.

Behind the scenes the bot keeps a copy of messages from text channels, announcement channels, public threads and forum posts. Private threads, DMs and the text chat of a voice channel are not copied. It uses the copy to tell whether you have posted, to write summaries and to answer questions, only in channels the asker can see. No command lets a member search it. Ticket prompts read each new message as it arrives, and meeting transcripts read only the file you upload or the call you invited the bot into. See What the bot stores.

The bot talks to you in three ways: direct messages, private replies and, in a few cases, the channel.

Direct messages it starts. Reminders, follow-ups, scheduled summaries, personal summaries, ticket prompts, meeting action items, the result of a voice meeting that ended by itself, and a one-time setup message if your timezone or working hours are missing.

Example of the bot in Discord

Doge Bot sends you a DM

Hi Sam, set your timezone and working hours so reminders reach you at the right time. Open the server and run /hours set in any channel with your start time, end time and timezone.

A ticket prompt is the same kind of message. Only you get it.

Example of the bot in Discord

Doge Bot sends you a DM

Hi Sam, this sounds like a feature idea: https://discord.com/channels/123456789012345678/123456789012345679/123456789012345680

Draft ticket: Add dark mode

Want a Linear ticket for it? You can edit it before anything is created.

Only you got this. I ask when a post looks like a new feature and Linear has no matching ticket, at most 3 times a day.
Create ticket No thanks

Private replies. When you use a command, a menu or a button, the answer is a message only you can see.

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/hours set start: 9am end: 5pm zone: America/New_York

Doge Bot replies

Working hours saved: 09:00 to 17:00 (America/New_York)

Only you can see this

A project summary is never posted for the whole channel. A scheduled one is a direct message, and /summary now answers with a message only you can see.

In a channel. The bot posts in four cases:

  • A reply to a transcript upload in the meetings channel, with the summary.
  • A notice and a result line in a voice channel’s chat when you invited it to take notes.
  • A short reply when you tag it for a follow-up with a time, such as “remind me in 2 hours”. With no time, it sends you a direct message with a time picker instead.
  • The answer, when you tag it with a question or run /ask with public set to true, using only what everyone in that channel can see.

It reads a tag to tell these apart, and stays silent when the tag is neither. The text of a message that tags the bot is sent to Google’s Gemini for this. See Follow-ups and Asking the bot questions.

  • It never puts the text of a message into a reminder. A follow-up links to the message and adds your note. A channel reminder may link to your previous post.
  • It never sends channel reminders for a work day that falls on Saturday or Sunday. A reminder for Friday can still arrive on the weekend if your day ends after midnight or the rule waits long enough.
  • It stays silent on a tag that is neither a follow-up request nor a question, and posts an answer in a channel only when you asked in public.
  • It never joins a voice channel by itself, never speaks in one and keeps no audio. It joins only when someone in that channel runs /notes start or uses Invite to voice on it.
  • It never creates a Linear ticket by itself. A ticket exists only after you submit a ticket prompt form or press Create selected on a meeting’s action items. A meeting can also move an existing ticket to Backlog, Todo, In Progress or In Review, or comment on it, but only when you press the button, and it never closes a ticket.
  • It sends the setup message at most once per person. If that message cannot be delivered, for example because your DMs are closed, it is not sent again.
  • The bot keeps a copy of messages from the channels it reads. No command lets a member search it, and summaries and answers use only channels you can see.
  • Anything that uses AI sends text to Google’s Gemini service, and some features also talk to Linear. Those features need a key from whoever runs the bot, and most are off until they switch them on.
  • Nothing is filed in Linear until you press a button yourself.
  • It ignores direct messages you send to it, except an invite link to a voice channel when voice notes are on, and it keeps no voice audio.
  • Most stored text can be removed. A message you delete loses its text, and transcripts, summaries and ticket drafts expire.

What the bot stores lists every item, how long it is kept and what leaves the bot.
