Follow-ups

A follow-up is a reminder you set on one message. At the time you choose, the bot sends you a direct message (DM) with a link back to it and an optional note. It works any day, at any hour, without working hours.

There are three ways to set one.

/follow is the only way to add a note.

message text required

A link to the message. In Discord, right-click the message (on a phone, long-press it) and choose “Copy Message Link”. It must be a message in this server.

when text required

When to remind you, for example in 30s, in 2h, tomorrow 9am or 9am. See time formats.

note text optional

Text to include in the reminder.

Allowed: up to 200 characters

Example of the bot in Discord

You type

/follow message: https://discord.com/channels/123456789012345678/200000000000000001/300000000000000002 when: in 2h note: Send the draft

This reply means the follow-up is saved. For a length of time, the confirmation says it in words, such as in 30 seconds or in 2 hours. For a clock time, such as tomorrow 9am, it shows a date and time like at 3 October 2026 at 09:00. Discord renders that in the timezone and date style of your device, which can differ from the one you saved with /hours set.

The link must point to this server and start with https://discord.com/channels/ or https://discordapp.com/channels/ (links from Discord’s test versions, which start ptb. or canary., work too). Links to other servers and to direct messages are refused. The bot does not check that the message exists or that you can see it.

Right-click a message (on a phone, long-press it), choose Apps, then Remind me to follow up. A private picker appears.

Pick a time

Choose a preset from the dropdown headed “When should I remind you?”:

PresetWhenShown
In 1 hourOne hour from the moment you clickAlways
In 3 hoursThree hours from the moment you clickAlways
Tomorrow 09:00Tomorrow at your work start, as the label said when the picker appearedOnly with a timezone
Next working day 09:00The next weekday at your work start, as the label said when the picker appearedOnly with a timezone

The time in the last two labels is your working-day start, or 09:00 if you have not set hours. They keep the moment shown when the picker appeared, so a picker you click after midnight still schedules the day its label named. If that moment has passed, you see That time is in the past. Pick a time at least 10 seconds from now. “Next working day” skips Saturday and Sunday, so on a Friday or Saturday it means Monday. All presets obey the limits.

For your own time, press Pick a time. A form titled “Remind me to follow up” asks When, with the hint in 30s, in 2h, tomorrow 9am, 9am, and takes the same formats as /follow.

The bot then confirms as /follow does:

Sure, I’ll help you follow up on https://discord.com/channels/123456789012345678/200000000000000001/300000000000000002 at 3 October 2026 at 09:00.

The menu and the tag flow have no note field. A picker works only for the person it was made for. If you are no longer in the server when you pick, nothing is saved. See Errors you might see.

Write a message that tags the bot: type @ and pick the bot’s name from the list. The bot reads the message to decide whether you are asking for a follow-up and whether you gave a time. A tag on a reply follows up on the message you replied to; a tag on a plain message follows up on that message.

If you give a time, in loose wording such as “in 30 seconds”, “tomorrow at 9” or “17:00”, the bot sets the follow-up at once and answers in the channel. Nothing goes to your direct messages.

Example of the bot in Discord

You reply and tag the bot

@Doge Bot remind me about this in 2 hours

Doge Bot replies

Sure, I’ll help you follow up on this in 2 hours.

A clock time is confirmed as a date and time, in your own timezone:

Example of the bot in Discord

You reply and tag the bot

@Doge Bot remind me tomorrow at 9

Doge Bot replies

Sure, I’ll help you follow up on this at 3 October 2026 at 09:00.

With no time, or a time the bot cannot read, it answers in the channel and sends you the same picker by direct message. Nothing is saved until you choose a time there.

You reply and tag the bot

@Doge Bot follow up on this

Doge Bot replies

Sure, I’ll help you follow up on this. Check your DMs to pick a time.

If the bot cannot send you the picker because your direct messages are closed, it says so in the channel and nothing is saved:

Example of the bot in Discord

You reply and tag the bot

@Doge Bot follow up on this

Doge Bot replies

I could not DM you. Use /follow to pick a time.

Every tag is read as a follow-up request, a question or neither. A question, when the bot’s question feature is switched on, gets a public reply and no follow-up: “remind me in 2 hours” is a follow-up, but “remind me what we decided about the lobby” is a question. See Asking the bot questions. A message that is neither, such as a greeting, gets no reply in the channel and no direct message.

The bot’s channel answers never include the text of your message and never ping anyone. They can also be one of the errors in Errors you might see, and then nothing is saved.

When the bot cannot read your message, a tag on a reply is a follow-up with no time and a tag on a plain message does nothing. This happens when the AI is not set up or does not answer, when you have already had 20 tags read in the last hour, and when the whole server has used up its readings for the day. A tag on a reply with nothing else in the message is also a follow-up with no time.

A tag sets a follow-up only when the bot has reminders switched on and you are not left out of a limited list of people. When you are left out, a tag sets nothing, while /follow and the message menu still save one that is skipped when it comes due (see What arrives). A question does not depend on that list. If the bot cannot send messages in the channel, it cannot answer there, but a follow-up you gave a time for is still saved.

Discord offers two entries with the bot’s name when you type @: the bot and its role. Either works. Any other role, @everyone and @here do nothing, and a message that pings @everyone or @here is ignored even if it also tags the bot. The mention can be anywhere in the message. The message text without the mention, cut to its first 2,000 characters, is sent to Google’s Gemini model to be read. See What the bot stores and Asking questions.

Used by /follow and the Pick a time form. Capitals do not matter.

Units are seconds (s, sec, secs, second, seconds), minutes (m, min, mins, minute, minutes), hours (h, hr, hrs, hour, hours) and days (d, day, days). A day is exactly 24 hours.

A clock time on its own means the next time it happens. At 10:00 your time, 9am means tomorrow at 09:00. Typed times do not skip weekends. Only the “Next working day” preset does.

Clock times accept the same forms as working hours. See Timezone and working hours.

The same message at the same moment gives one reminder, keeping the first note. Different moments give separate reminders. There is no command to list or cancel a follow-up: once saved, it is sent.

The default wording is below. An admin can change it, but it always keeps the link.

Example of the bot in Discord

Doge Bot sends you a DM

Good morning Sam, this is a friendly reminder to follow up on https://discord.com/channels/123456789012345678/200000000000000001/300000000000000002. Send the draft

It opens with a greeting for the time of day in your timezone and the first word of your name, then the link and your note, if you set one. It never includes the text of the original message, and the bot does not look at that message again, so if it was deleted you still get the reminder and the link no longer opens.

A follow-up arrives at the second you chose, give or take a moment. An overdue one, for example because the bot was off, is still sent however late. Weekends, working hours and your timezone do not hold it back.
